Going Green During Pregnancy

You are a soon-to-be mom. Naturally, you want the best for your baby. The best clothes, the nicest nursery, the best everything for your little one. Part of this should also be that desire to be the best mom for him or her. One way to do that is to be an eco-friendly mom. You start being a ‘green’ mom by using environmentally-friendly products.

Organic products. Indulge in such products during your entire pregnancy. Munch on fresh fruits and vegetables instead of your usual chips and pizza snacks. Fruits and veggies are not only environmentally friendly but also healthy. They have the necessary vitamins and minerals that are good for you and your baby. Eating them protects you from chemicals that may have bad effects to your pregnancy.

Wear bamboo. The usual maternity dresses on the market are made of cotton. You might say that wearing cotton is good because it is already made of a plant. However, there’s a ‘greener’ way to do it, and that is to wear bamboo. Bamboo does not need as much water as cotton does when grown. This makes it more eco- friendly than cotton. Bamboo fabric is also known to be more durable than cotton. There are now companies that sell clothes made of bamboo, some of them you can find on the internet.

Make a ‘green’ nursery. You don’t have to literally color it green (but you sure can if you want to). Make it green by using non-toxic substances. Choose paints that do not contain lead. Also, in deciding on the materials to put in the nursery, choose the ones that are environment friendly. For example, buy wooden cabinets to store your baby’s clothes instead of those made of plastic. Make it a point as well to use recyclable materials to decorate the room.

Ask for a green baby shower. The ordinary things found in a baby shower are the diaper cake and the gifts. Try to make it extraordinary by asking your friends to give you environment-friendly baby products. Examples are recyclable and biodegradable feeding bottles and bedding.
